We are going to look at the ball diagram again. There is so much in that diagram to look at. In August, we talked about how we have these divine needs for love, acceptance, value/worth, security and affirmation. And when we are not believers (and even when we are), we try to get these divine needs met through the world system.
For example, the world system teaches that if you get educated, go on to university and come out with a degree, you will get a job that pays well, be able to take care of your family and BE HAPPY. Those last two words are the key!
The world system is based on created things – schools, houses, jobs, wives and husbands, children – are all created things and beings. While these can bring seasons of joy, they cannot fulfill. So you are let with this INSATIABLE need for more. Insatiable is defined as a need that incapable of being satisfied. Nothing in this world can satisfy. So what happens? Everyone has different flesh that is driven toward different needs depending on what lies you believed and have been incorporated into your thinking from childhood. When you try to meet these needs in created things, they “inflate” you for a moment or even a day or a week or a month…but then they cannot satisfy, so they deflate you.
For some people, security is their biggest need so they work hard at their to get this need met – they work very hard but they never satisfy their need for security, they save money in a bank account but it never satisfies their need for security. For others, it may be love. They can never have enough girl friends, enough sex to feel fully loved. For others, it’s feeling valuable. They are constantly helping, inserting themselves into situations that haven’t asked for their help, running themselves into an exhausted state in order to feel valuable.
If you were to pursue creation to get your needs met, I imagine that after a while, you would recognize that none of this is working, and this could lead to great levels of depression, anger and even suicidal thoughts. It is a life without hope.
Insatiable needs can never be satisifed through creations, only through the Creator. Jesus said in John 4:14, “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
