Matthew 9:38-35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus was in Galilee, doing His Father’s work – teaching, evangelizing and healing. Verse 36 shows us the heart position from which He was doing it – a heart filled with compassion. When our hearts are filled with compassion for those around us, we can see more clearly how much they are struggling to get through their day, we can see their unhappiness or their anger or their despair because they have only themselves to figure this life out. The weight of this is even larger for the man with a family and no job, for the single mother trying to raise her children, for the teenager who does not see options for their future. The hardships of life are not transformed into ease because we know Jesus. It DOES mean that we have a Savior who is always with us, to comfort us, lead us, guide us, and give us wisdom.
Jesus not only had compassion on the people because of their helplessness, but also because there WERE leaders who were not leading – the synagogue leadership, the Pharisees – concerned more with appearing righteous than have a heart position of seeking God’s righteous, and ignoring or even adding to the real problems and issues among their people.
Who are we following today? Are we listening to the voice of our righteous holy Savior, reading scriptures to see what He has to say about how to live, how to handle problems or are we listening to other voices who give the appearance of righteousness and holiness?
May we grow in our compassion for others, and instead of seeing and judging another person for their flaws and issues, see that they are harrassed and helpless without good guidance. Jesus is the answer! The harvest is indeed plentiful all the time now more than ever, and those who are lost and struggling need to hear about Jesus.
Kiswahili:
